Reflections At Sunset
by Juliette Lively Dickey
In 1972 when my husband was fifty-two years old he was hospitalized three times within the year. The doctors did not diagnose his problem for several months. Then he was told he had a heart disease, put on tranquilizers and kept immobile for four years. At that time he was sent to the North Florida Regional Hospital for tests and open heart surgery. After having quadruple by-passes he recovered enough to get around some. Six years later he was again hospitalized and had another open heart surgery with triple by-passes that time. Then again in 1996 he went into the hospital with severe pains and had the third open heart surgery. After a year he needed more tests and another procedure and the doctors put a stint into one of his arteries.
ADJUSTMENT TO LIFE'S DIFFICULTIES
When just a young family man reaching his prime,
He was suddenly struck down without reason or rhyme.
Suffering severe heart pains and angina attacks,
Hurting, scared and not understanding the facts.
Doctors kept him immobile with prescribed "dope",
Using different medications to avoid a stroke.
For four long years, the time passed extremely slow,
Before even specialized doctors were in "the know",
Of arteriosclerosis, catheterization, and by
An operation to clear blocked arteries
Now he was able to hunt, fish and roam through the woods,
Much better but yet not well enough to work as he should.
So of necessity a house
Cleaning and cooking his freshly caught fish and game,
While his devoted wife, as a secretary, worked for pay.
He found it wasn't easy to stay home day after day.
Eventually he learned how to spend some quiet time.
Recording music, reading, even sewing to occupy his mind.
For twenty long years his pain and suffering we have shared,
The entire family grateful to God his life was spared.
Through the years he had so much to share: advice, knowledge,
Something for all
We have shared in his hobbies, often with tears and laughter,
Understanding one day there will be a pain
