Reflections At Sunset
by Juliette Lively Dickey
Walking the Line was written after a day of hard work clearing out the boundary line between two plots of land in Georgia. When the children called to ask what we had been doing while at the hunt camp we couldn't help but rib them a bit.
WALKING THE LINE
A new meaning we stumbled upon today
For that trite old expression or cliché
Armed with an axe, machete and bug spray,
Down the border line we slowly cut our way.
Through dense woods and bramble vines,
We clear the way between two border lines.
Cutting, marking the line, then taking a bead,
We make our way through the tall, grassy reed.
Despite the scolding from angry blue jays above,
Through the brambles and briars a line we wove.
A startled frisky little rabbit hopped away,
Through the tall rustling grass, making it sway.
Pausing, we stretch, look all around to see,
A bushy
Dropping his half
As under the huge spreading oak limbs we hamper.
Eating a sandwich and drinking cold ice tea,
Relaxing in the shade of the gnarled old tree.
In the stillness, a Holy Presence we feel,
We stand in awe of God who made the world real.
As the bright sun glows in beautiful blue skies,
God's powerful love unfolds before our eyes.
For all us lowly creatures to enjoy for awhile,
Till we come to life's last lonely mile.
At the end of the day we completed our task,
Having cleared the right
Happy and bone
Satisfied with a back
The kids called, "What did you do today"?
"Walk the Line", with a silly smirk, we say!
