Reflections At Sunset
by Juliette Lively Dickey
My mother was a woman of many talents. She would take scraps of cloth and create a beautiful quilt, or rocks and shells and make a lovely picture. She won ribbons at county fairs for many of her crafts. She always worked in her garden and canned many quarts of fruits and vegetables to feed her family throughout the winter months. She also wrote poetry and was published.
MY MOTHER
"Grandma Lively" as she was known to one and all,
Postman, banker, sons, cousins, not only the small.
She married "Jim Tack" when she was only fifteen,
Becoming mother to three children who were pre
Raised chickens, sold eggs, bought herself some land,
Ten children she bore, but she had only one husband.
She loved hoeing her garden and working in the sun,
Flowers, fruits and vegetables she grew for fun.
Cleaning, paring, steaming and canning in many a jar,
To feed thirteen children and visitors from near and far.
Always on Sunday after Church a crowd gathered to dine,
Enjoying fried chicken, biscuits and tasting syllabub wine.
She fashioned chambray, denim and twill into men's pants,
Working hard, selling to stores her nest egg to supplant.
She sewed the leftovers into school dresses for us girls,
Making them pretty with embroidered flowers and swirls.
To her grandchildren's delight she made them each a quilt,
Out of scraps, some appliqued with roses that don't wilt.
She drove a school bus full of children, nice or unruly,
Earning their love and respect and was called "Ms. Julia".
She had imagination, talents and ability plenty,
Her originality showed in gifts she made for many.
Ceramics, tin wreaths, pictures of cloth, rock or shell,
She won prizes at County Fair, gave gifts, but didn't sell.
A 1982 car was brought by this eighty
Saying she hoped her children would be able to do the same.
Still later taking advantage of her age and health,
She loved getting attention and played it to the hilt
She enjoyed rocking and singing a lot of the time,
And lived to the ripe old age of Eighty
