Reflections At Sunset
by Juliette Lively Dickey
At our Poetry Club meeting we were shown a picture and asked to write a poem about it. I could envision a lost dog hiding in the bushes near a broken down house, waiting for his master to come home.
WHY DID YOU ABANDON ME?
Why did you leave me all alone
Without water or even a bone?
Did you grow too feeble and old ,
Unable your own life to keep and hold.
Your old dog hiding in the trees,
among palm fronds rustling in the breeze.
Rusty iron nails,
Decaying wagon wheels,
Yard with overgrown weeds,
Spiders in webs spun,
Buzzing bees in the sun.
Ready at sign of danger to hide,
He turns his head to one side.
Listening, listening for that squeaky old gate,
Wondering what keeps you so late.
Always keeping watch over the home place,
Waiting, waiting to see your old wrinkled face.
Why did you abandon me?
Are you at peace, happy and free?
