Reflections At Sunset
by Juliette Lively Dickey
Maybe a month had passed when Mary again approached us to write a poem. This time it was for her Poetry Club that was having a contest. She was insistent and the following is my first attempt at Poetry. Of course, I didn't win the contest but it was fun to try. This in the long run, opened up a new interest for me and an avenue to express my feelings and thoughts.
SPECIAL PEOPLE
I'm Special
Because I'm ME!
Wife, mother, homemaker, secretary, and would-be-poet,
teacher, taxi, caretaker, and always would-be-know-it.
He's Special
Because He's HE!
Husband, father, man of valor, builder, personality true,
talents galore, example of goodness, trustworthy sure!
They're Special
Because they're THEY!
Girls, boys, children, more precious than silver and gold,
in days past brought joy, as days flee more memories unfold.
We are Special
Because we are WE!
We who are older, leaning on a stronger hand,
becoming less bolder and looking forward to the Glory Land!
During the War of Desert Storm, there were many pleas for letters to be sent to the men and women in the Services. I started thinking about how proud I was of my husband, serving in the Army during World War II, and my two sons who joined the navy after High School and served overseas. I wrote "You Are Special" as a tribute to them as well as all those who were in the Service at that time.
YOU ARE SPECIAL
YOU ARE SPECIAL!
You who left your loved ones behind,
to serve on foreign soil for mankind.
YOU ARE SPECIAL!
You who chose to defend this land
to uphold justice and liberty on Arabian Sand.
I ARE SPECIAL!
I chose to serve my Country, just like you,
on foreign soil in World War Two.
THEY ARE SPECIAL!
Two sons on USS ships did sail
on Mediterranean and Red Seas detail.
WE ARE SPECIAL!
Because we believe in Liberty and Justice for all
and pray daily for all of you to return whole.
